Tips for Planning Your Wedding Flowers
For many brides, the most difficult floral decision can be finding the right florist. The touch of a good floral designer is unmistakable and will be reflected in the feel of the ceremony, as well as in the wedding photos.
When selecting a florist, you should find a florist you can trust to bring about your vision for your wedding day. Select one who is willing to listen to you and incorporate your ideas into the overall design, so that your wedding day will look like you've always imagined. Here are some other tips for working with a florist to create your wedding flower plan:
- Figure out your budget ahead of time. Bring the budget with you when you visit the florist and ask what they can do to work within your budget. This will work better than choosing the flowers and then asking the cost.
- Choose flowers, which are in season or which are readily available all year round. When we have to import specialty flowers, it will push the price of your flowers higher.
- Always give the florist as much lead time as you can. For a larger wedding, ideally you should reserve your date 4 to 6 months prior to your wedding. Smaller weddings may require only 2-4 months. However, keep in mind, each florist can only do so many weddings in a day. So you will want to be sure and reserve your date as soon as you can.
- If possible, bring swatches or drawings of the gowns to be worn. This will help with the flower and color selection. (I.e. bridesmaids, mothers or flower girls)
- If you have selected a wedding theme or style, bring photos to demonstrate the color, look and feel you're trying to achieve.
- Avoid weddings during major holiday seasons when flower prices are at their highest. Florists are not able to devote the individuality of a particular wedding due to being extremely busy with many orders during the holidays, such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or the weekend before Christmas.
- Use your ceremony flowers at your reception. Make arrangements to have them transferred and set up before the guests arrive.
- It is sometimes very tempting to try and save some money by having a friend or relative do your flowers. There are several drawbacks to this decision, including the amount of time involved and the general overall stress level when creating sophisticated floral designs on a definite schedule. By selecting and using a professional florist, you can eliminate worry and stress for yourself, your friends and your family. You can be certain your flowers and your wedding day will be just as beautiful as you dreamed.
- Visit more than one florist. Be prepared with a detailed list of your floral needs and give each florist the same information in order that the florists can, in return give a comparable estimate. Remember floral designers are trained and highly skilled floral artists, their ideas have value. Also, each floral shop is different and by visiting each shop, you can get a feel for the quality and the friendly atmosphere which appeals to you.
- Ask your florist for ideas to stretch your flower budget. Florists are overflowing with creative ways to make use of your budget and flowers wisely.
